All week up in Dublin I wanted to do our first session of cow work with Ozzie. Came down, caught oz, tack on, quick trot in hand, it we go to the cattles field and get on. Cattle are quite far away but start to walk over to us. Maybe about 20 head of two year olds. I've never ridden oz with cattle. Hehheee.
We were practising our soft feel and working one step at a time, forwards, backwards, rollback, circles, etc. All good. One of two tries to take over, when we were just working on our own, but he didn't get very far. Some small distractions out in the big field and also he thought he should be allowed to eat the very nice grass. All fine though.
Cattle came over nice and quietly which was nice for the first time Spent then about 10 to 15 mins walking around the perimeter of them, and asking oz to walk towards one at a time, to get the cattle to yield to him and improve his confidence.
he was great, the one who didn't really want to move he was happy to try and bite. He was also keen to reverse into them, and probably line up a good kicks but I didn't let him
Super, exactly the same as in paddock, and actually had a bit of a freer walk once I spotted a bullock and we both walked off to move him back to the herd.
Cattle walked off as a group, so we walked after them a bit and now as oz wasn't sure if he rather completely go with them !!!! We turned back home and did more serpentines, backups, forequarter yields etc till I had his head back where I wanted it again. More yawns. Got off he was cool, walked back down to the yard. Delighted.
Yaaaaayyyyy!!!! I have the start of a cow pony!!!!!!
