So, I'm going to have a go at making a rope halter. I can leave the knots loose so I have some adjustment when it's on my steed, but the question is, what is that ideal adjustment? Googling it seems to produce a variety of people showing what they think is a correct fit and no two are alike. I know what I think but do you lovely lot have any pics to share of what you'd consider to be a well-fitting rope halter?
I'm thinking about incorporating rings in mine so it can be used as a sidepull as well...which throws up another question - do I put them on the 'pressure point' knots or on their own, lower set of knots to help with stability? Or, is it better to ride with the reins in the bottom loop like a bosal?
Thoughts? 😃

Ooh, interesting! I don't use them myself as I don't know how to fit one properly. (I cringe when I see ponies tied up with them! )

They're one of those "it depends on the horse" items. Some hate them. From my point of view, working from a mobility scooter, a nicely fitted one on an eauine that's ok wih wearing it, gives me a bit more control if ...interesting... moments happen!

Rob at Lodge Ropes has it spot on in this article. And if the "tail" of the knot is a bit long you tuck it away under the throat bit so that it can't flick in the eye. If you're riding in a rope halter it should be quite snug, but you can normally achieve that with the knot you use to tie the rein. lodgeropes.webs.com/ropehalters.htm

If you browse around the Net you'll find some photos of halters that clearly don't fit well, even some rather expensive branded ones!

Yes, I've seen people riding in ones that are too loose and they slide around far too much - no clarity at all and probably pretty uncomfy for the horse too. If you browse around the Net you'll find some photos of halters that clearly don't fit well, even some rather expensive branded ones! Yes, there are some shocking pictures out there!
