Nancy (AKA Namara) became ill. After blood tests she is diagnosed with EMS (Horse type 2 diabetes). Anything containing sugar is banned, hay to be soaked for 12 hours which involves 4 haynets being soaked overnight in a large container. The filling of haynets is a very dusty job, so in deference to my asthma I mask up. This is an extremely interesting exercise as when masked the glasses mist up, so I have a choice of being totally blinded with mist or slightly blind without glasses. My sense of feel and space is improving rapidly. We also purchased a water pump as the water must be disposed of, it carries the sugar from the hay, this is pumped out to the vegetable plot (impressed with our recycling?). No grass is allowed and her hard feed to change, pain killers to be administered as her feet hurt and 18 other tablets to be taken twice daily.
The good news is Small Fat & Hairy (AKA Abby) is devoted to her and is happy to share her confinement and proposed diet change. She believes anything we offer must be of the highest value and eaten immediately.
The bad news. Nancy is convinced the pain killers are poison, we changed to a more expense sive one - that also was poison, we tried dissolving them and syringing them into her mouth which ended up with her standing with her nose pointing at the sun, her lips pursed and teeth clenched. That was serious poison. We changed to yet another one needing a mortgage to purchase which also was to be syringed into her mouth, big sigh of relief, that was acceptable, her soaked hay was just about acceptable, now to consider her hard feed and the 18 tablets twice daily!
The hard feed - I should have known after purchasing only the best recommended feeds that Nancy would consider this also as poison, thank heaven for SFH, so we have reverted so some of her original feed that is sugar free with a tiny grain of the new recommended feed. This is only treated as ghastly and will be eaten as a favour to me.
Now for the 18 tablets twice daily. After looking at the size and quantity she was to have I decided to dissolve them and syringe them in. This does work and she takes them, but tells me this is also poison and will refuse her polos treat (sugar free) to punish me. Unfortunately she is correct. The sides of her mouth are starting to blister from contact with the liquidised tablets, so I have to clean and rinse her lips and put on an ointment, this she feels is acceptable.
The pain relief course has now ceased and only 4 more days of tablets.
She is feeling better, but stiff. I have organised for both her and SFH to have front shoes on to help them cope on the hard ground (after the rain the floods, after the floods the grass, after the grass the drought, after the drought the hard lumpy ground.)
My thanks to all those involved with this, even visitors have been roped in (thanks Jan) with some of the dirty dusty work, all for the comfort of Her Royal Highness Nancy.
She is now free of pain, sound and turned out for 8 hrs a day. Fingers crossed we can manage the grass growing season.
