So, interesting discussion today with my friend, a BHSI, qualified in the 70's. She doesn't have a problem with the use of flash/drop/micklem nosebands (not over tightened) saying they're a useful tool to stop a horse evading the (correctly fitted) bit.
My point is, that, assuming the bit IS comfortable, surely strapping the face shut is just putting a sticking plaster over the problem - isn't an evasion coming from what's going on in an equine's head? Or does strapping the mouth shut really help them to understand the bit?
To me it seems like saying right, if you won't look for the answer I want I'm going to force you to find it. And how will that get rid of the brace behind the evasion?
I'm prepared to be corrected if these things do have a purpose, I'd just like a better idea of what that purpose is!
Do these things have a place? Discuss! 😊

Well, in the 1950's and 60's (when I was learning to ride) there was only a cavesson noseband,as far as I knew! And mostly, our ponies didn't wear even that.
I don't think there is much discussion to be had, just my opinion, because a correctly schooled horse does not need extra bits of leather around its nose (and certainly doesn't need its mouth tied shut) it needs an investigation as to why it is "evading" the bit and possibly more/better schooling - is that wot you just said, nic? LOL

😂 yeah, pretty much. Only had cavesson nosebands when I learnt to ride in the 80's, too. Or English hackamores for the horsees who didn't like a bit.

Yes, me too. I think that it's just putting a sticking plaster over the problem. However, I have used them in the past- mainly because it's the accepted method for a horse that crosses his jaw and buggers off. I either use a cavesson or no noseband now. I think I'd hate to have my face strapped shut if I was in any way unsure about what I'm being asked to do. That said, I'd rather use a noseband as a tool than use a stronger bit Xx

Yes, I'd agree with that. Better than a harsh bit I guess. But both are sticking plaster solutions, aren't they?
