H came to live with us (me and Kofi) in November 2005, when he was about 10 months old. And he was put to sleep by the vet today, aged 13 1/2 - not very old. He was a blue roan shetland, crossed with welsh and goodness knows what else, standing at a whole 7 hands high.
We had a lot of fun, love and mischief. Khan and Smokey adored him. They saw his body, but when they were turned out in the field a couple of hours later, they still called and stared down towards the house, ears pricked for an answer. After about 10 minutes of calling and listening they wandered off.
He was my baby pony, very naughty and had no concept of personal space or of doing what a person asked but totally loveable. Thick black velvety fur on his little face just asked to be stroked and when he wanted his chest scratched, he'd lift his front leg and poke you gently with his hoof, then put his head on your shoulder and lean on you.Often he would pull you in for a cuddle.
It's taken me two years to make this decision and although some people might think it was a bit soon - I didn't want to see how bad it would all get. Already, he was breathless just walking up to the field and he couldn't gallop and buck with the others.
The only future for him was months of box rest, being on a ventilator mask every day, aggressive remedial shoeing and permanently banned from ever eating a blade of grass again. I just refuse to accept that this is any kind of quality of life for a cheeky, sociable little being who loved his brothers and loved his grub.
He reminded me of a MacFeegle
There is so much I could say about him, so many funny stories of his antics, how much he relished jumping, what a beautiful elevated trot he had, how kind he was with children who dressed him up and plaited his mane into fantastical shapes.
So he had a last night out in the field with no muzzle and ate his way through a mountain of herby treats and carrots till - hilarious to the end - he fell on top of the vet as the drugs hit him
So,I hope he has arrived at Rainbow Bridge to meet his uncle Kofi and I hope I will see him again someday
