Squeaky Boy, my elderly bluepoint Siamese, had to be put to sleep this morning. He had been a rescue so I didn't know exactly how old he was but must have been at least 15. He had been losing weight over the last couple of months and I had been tempting him to eat by offering all sorts of delicacies for a while. The weight loss continued and he stopped eating altogether yesterday and by bedtime, he looked very unwell.
Today he was very, very weak and wobbly and the vet said his heart was failing,so there was no choice, really, but to let him go. Anything else would have been selfish on my part. To convince me it was time, vet did an ultrasound which showed tumours on his liver so no hope.
He was a quiet and gentle cat who loved cuddling up to the others and when Karis arrived as a kitten,8 years ago, Squeaky decided to mother him (whether Karis wanted it or not LOL) and devotedly washed and worried about him day and night. He would never have made a MENSA member and spent many a winter evening convinced that if only he could get the balance right, it would be possible to sleep on top of a single panel radiator. He would shout from the top of the stairs when the water bowl needed filling up or the litter tray should be cleaned out. If he woke up and discovered Karis wasn't in the same room, he would yowl till he found him.
He was a most beautiful cat with the sweetest of faces and the bluest of eyes. Even hardened Siamese - haters remarked on his loveliness.
I am so sad to lose him.
Why do we do it,eh? Set ourselves up for this heartache by loving animals?
